From the Chair 4/18/2025

Our BNARGS April meeting kicked off the year with style and popularity. Over 60 people came to hear Tony Avent speak on his life as a gardener. And what a fantastic life it was. It felt so reassuring to hear he killed over 50K of plants. (I know, I know – it certainly lessoned my feelings of guilt for killing all those “rare and special” plants with which I have been entrusted.) Many of the people who played a part in his gardening experiences came to hear him. It was great to catchup with them all.

And he wowed us with his auctioneering. We wish to thank all those who donated rare and exquisite plants, especially O’Brien Nursery in Granby, CT. Note – they do not mail order, but a trip there is always a great event. And there are the most amazing plants.

The chapter had also gotten plants from Illahe Nursery , most of which sold. But there are still some leftovers and a few from last year’s outreach for our first seedling sale in June. Don’t miss that it.

Tony blogged about his experiences that day as well as during the week before he spoke to the New England Chapter NARGS: https://www.juniperlevelbotanicgarden.org/hanging-with-a-mass-of-rockers/ Be sure to check it out.
