From the Chair 04/15/2026

When was the last time it was this warm in mid- April? Shirt sleeve weather this early…it’s too warm for me! But it is not uncommon for bloodroot to appear earlier than this. They are actually a little late. So is the opening of the kabschia type saxifraga-usually a little earlier.

As previously mentioned on May 2nd we have our joint meeting with the New England Chapter of the American Primrose Society. It’s a Study Weekend packed into one day or two, depending on if you want to enter the show. The meeting is free and open to the public. Of course if you are not yet a member of BNARGS, NEAPS, or the BBG, you will need to pay the BBG admission fee.

And yes, BNARGS members are invited to enter the judged Primula Show. Show classes and rules may be viewed here.

One might get anything planned for the show entry ready now. This heat wave won’t last. But one could put the potted plants in a cool garage or such, to ensure bloom last a few more weeks.

Whether you enter or not, plan to view the judged show, shop the vendors, and hear the lectures. Jodie Mitchell from Barnhaven Primroses will be giving two talks: morning and afternoon! Mark your calendars. Here is the schedule:
